Best book for my new DBA role!
This book has given me what I needed for the SQL Server DBA position I have been tasked with to perform. The book goes over many aspects(Hardware, Windows OS administration, Data modeling, technical writing, SQL Server Technology, and much more)of the DBA role that are required to become proficient in to be successful as a DBA. The CDROM is for once a useful CD that can be used by a DBA on a every day basis with respect to the scripts and documents that are on the CD.

It is a great book that is well written and you can tell it comes from a DBA who is active in the field and has experience.

I would recommend this book for all to buy

Understand the Complete Role of a DBA!
The book is refreshing to read about the many different roles that a productive DBA needs to be knowledgeable with and to become efficient in. Many technical books go into great effort about the SQL Server technology, which I feel you can more info via MSDN, magazines, and conferences. But, no one goes into the complete role. Many DBAs are not proficient in data modeling, selecting hardware for database servers, creating support documentation, and understanding the OS and network settings that are effective and beneficial for a database server. This book goes into all of this.

A SQL book for Beginners ONLY!
I bought it reading all the good reviews about it being touted as a "Book for all DBA's". I would definitely disagree. It's definitely a book for beginners. As a book for the beginner DBA, it does a good job of going through all the tasks that a DBA need to do, and shows all the things that SQL 2000 can do. But the information on each aspect of SQL is glassed over. It doesn't get into much detail. But for what it does cover, is well written and well-organized. So, as a beginner book, I would give it a 4-5 star rating, but as a book for all DBA's, it's 1-star. I averaged the two to get my official rating -- a 3-star.
