Customer ReviewsRating: 4 out of 5 A Story of Love and War Once involved in World War I, Lieutenant Frederic Henry's fate lies on the verge of being doomed while carrying out his duty with the Italian ambulance corps on the Italian front. As an ambulance driver, he soon faces the inevitable outcomes of the brutal war as he gets wounded. Fortunately, his injury leads him to his sudden love for Catherine Barkley, an English nurse. Their love is clearly a response to the troubles and horrors of the war and the world. As Henry's love for Catherine grows, his disillusionment with the war increases as he struggles to free himself from the war in order to be with Catherine. When together at last, Catherine and Henry flee the country and live in a small, peaceful town, where everything seems to be going their way - or so they thought. Many times the novel foreshadows the doom that eventually comes to the lovers. To my surprise, Catherine and Henry's genuine love disappears. In his ending, Hemingway proves that love, like anything else in this world, cannot last. A Farewell to Arms is certainly one of Hemingway's greatest works. Through his powerful writing and ample use of details, Hemingway created a world that captured life as it was during World War I. From the detailed description of the artillery bombardment to the corrupt violence of the Italian retreat, the novel does well to emphasize the devastation war has brought on everyone involved. His unique style of writing and descriptive use makes this book as interesting as it is to read. I highly recommend it to anyone interested! Rating: 5 out of 5 romeo and juliet I like it. It's very interesting about the way Romeo and Juliet, Montague and Capulet, have somewhat of a clandestine relationship with eachother that cannot be parted. The way Juliet and Romeo die at the end made me realize how strong love can be to the paramours. Rating: 4 out of 5 Review of Angela's Ashes, By: Frank McCourt Angela's Ashes was a memeoir of Frank McCourt's childhood and teenage years. It took place in Ireland, where he grew up in poverty with his mom, dad, and siblings. His father was an alcoholic, and his mother couldn't work. This was because women weren't allowed to work, and because she had so many children to look after. He grew up with and one sister, and four brothers, most of which died. Overall the book was interesting to read, becuase it gave you a look at a different way of life. But we feel it was very rudundant in this way of life. This book allowed you to enter a tottaly different world. A world that makes you appreciate what you have, when you see how others appreciate how little they have. It was interesting to see how Frank handle each situation as they came to him. He had to be more mature, because his father left him, and his family at a very young age. This meant that he had to be the man of the house. He took this challenge very well, and supported his family as best as he could. This made him a very independent person as he started his voyage to America.
