Lack of Windows specific information makes this a hard sell
We all know that while one should not judge a book by its cover, one generally can judge a book by its title. While I was initially intrigued by the title of this book, I was a little disappointed to find the author already apologizing for the title in the preface. I'll be honest with you, I was pretty unhappy with the text of his apology.The author writes that 'there is probably no such thing as a completely bulletproof network and networked host'. With the author's extensive talents and expertise in the field of information security, he should have unmistakably stated that 'there is unequivocally no such thing as a completely bulletproof network and networked host'. The difference is crucial, since even items that are advertised in Security Management as bulletproof, are only bulletproof for a limited number of bullets on a restricted surface. As corporate networks are exceedingly complex, there is clearly no way to make them bulletproof. Despite the fact that more and more is being spent on information systems security, things are getting more and more complex, and complex systems are much harder to protect. With that, Bulletproofing TCP/IP-Based Windows NT/2000 Networks nonetheless does provide a decent overview of various threats and attacks that anyone running Windows NY and 2000 servers should be aware of. Unfortunately, only about 45 pages of the book actually deal with topics that are unique to Windows NT & 2000. The other parts of the book are much more generic and unfocused on Windows. While the book does have a lot of worthwhile information; its lack of Windows specific information, combined with its steep price...makes its purchase a hard sell.

Great book focused on attack techniques and plugging holes
Normally I do not write reviews, but I felt after reading this book readers need to know how good it is. I work with NT and 2000 on a daily basis, so at first I thought this book would be focused on registry settings, etc. To my initial surprise, it wasn't. After rereading the title I realized Held was focused on the TCP/IP protocol suite and securing Windows devices from attack. Reading this book gave me a significant insight into attack methods and how to either stop them or negate their effect. For example, this book is the first to expose the script-form attack which can cost organizations a bundle of money. By reading this book I learned how to verify key firewall and router settings as well as make certain changes to our web servers that will alleviate potential security risks. The practical information provided tells me the author knows his stuff. Overall this book is a five star plus.

A very poor security book on WIndows NT/2000
I bought this book with particular interest on extra security ideas for Windows 2000. The title would lead you ,to the incorrect, conclusion that there is some coverage of windows 2000.
The book deals with the ISO stack, and beginners TCP/IP, Cisco router access lists, firewalls, and scanners, everything but Windows 2000.Then we have the Windows chapter, which is exclusively based on NT 4.0, with the odd minor mention of Win2k. This book was published in 2001, and the author comments that the latest version of IIS is version 4.0. The title of this book is incorrect, and if I could get my money back, through mis-representation, I would. The chapters on access lists and TCP/IP are fine for beginners, but then why not call the book, Network security for beginners. Unless you are very new to network security, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for security information on Windows 2000.
