I made a mistake.
Near the end of my February 27 review I typed "Is one of these the equivalent of .pdf?" The sentence should read "Is one of these the equivalent of .psd?" Sorry folks.

Think twice about this book.
I use a Mac. On page 5 of the Introduction Ms. Kabili tells us that the instructions in her book are based on Windows XP but "...if there are different instructions for Macintosh users, those appear in parenthesis...." Really Ms. Kabili? On the first page of the introductory chapter we are told how to deselect the clipboard and the instruction given is for Windows' users. There is nothing to indicate that the instruction for Mac users is different. (Hint: Hey Jan! It's Photoshop Elements-Preferences-General.) On the next page we are told how to save a file and, once again, Mac users are short-changed. Under Step 5 we are told "...Photoshop Elements 2.0 automatically adds a .psd suffix to the file name..." Maybe that's how it works in Windows but not on a Mac. First, on my OS X system the file is automatically saved as a .jpg. In addition, the drop-down file menu does not offer a .psd suffix. It offers Photoshop, Photoshop EPS, Photoshop PDF, and Photoshop 2.0. Is one of these the equivalent of .pdf? How do I know? Furthermore, Ms. Kabili apparently doesn't have a clue. And this is just on the first two pages of the book. My advice is to look elsewhere. That's what I did.

Perhaps the best PSE book ever written
I have a library of about 10 books on PSE and have referred to them all on occasion. However, this book I will read from front to back, all 430 plus pages. There are also another 50 plus pages on the CD which accompanies the book. The CD contains all of the graphics needed for the creation of the course projects. She even lists her E mail address on the CD. Jan teaches PSE by creating 10 or so sports related post card size graphics. The projects require you to use many of the specialized tools and filters. She has some very impressive credentials (technical, literary and academic). However, her ability to convey her knowledge is what impresses me most. A five star rating implies perfection. Therefore, I might downgrade the rating to 4.9 because of the first tutorial in the book, "Confidence Builder". I believe this tutorial is too much too soon for a bare bones PSE beginner (page 7). If this tutorial seems too advanced, you can skip it and return after session 2. Amazon offers the book for about $32 with free shipping, a substantial saving and a very good investment. I wish Jan had written the book when PSE 2 was first released over a year ago. However, she has apparently been busy writing other books.
