Change your perspective on publishing
This book is written for teachers, but it has much of interest to writers and designers in business communications, too. Dr. Kalmbach's history of the technology of writing and reading is lucid and eye-opening. And his is the first study of print communication I ever read that situates the text/graphic arts in a social, rather than purely cognitive or aesthetic context.

I have been a business communications professional for many years and produced innumerable brochures and direct mail pieces. This book gave me a new way to think about how publications fit in the stream of human communication. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in graphic design, copywriting or educating for literacy in a multimedia world.
