Dr. Kalmbach's history of the technology of writing and reading is lucid and eye-opening. And his is the first study of print communication I ever read that situates the text/graphic arts in a social, rather than purely cognitive or aesthetic context.I have been a business communications professional for many years and produced innumerable brochures and direct mail pieces. This book gave me a new way to think about how publications fit in the stream of human communication. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in graphic design, copywriting or educating for literacy in a multimedia world.
